Back to School in the Big Apple

Can you smell the freshly sharpened pencils? Hear the rustle of the looseleaf notebook paper? August is here, and that means it’s time to get back to school! This month at Hammock Pack, we’re bringing the Big Apple to your doorstep. We’re excited to introduce you to New York City and explore its rich and vibrant mixture of style and culture.

If you’re wondering what things you can do to mix up your regular “back to school” routine, take a few tips from the city that never sleeps.

Pack Lunches with Farmers Market Fare

Farmers markets have grown in popularity over the last several years, and for good reason. These weekly (or in some cases, daily!) pop-up markets serve as an excellent way for local growers and craftsmen to sell the fruits of their labor.

By shopping at these street markets, not only are you supporting small, local businesses, but you’re also putting safer food on your table. Farmers market fare is often organic and raised in pesticide-free environments, making it a healthier choice for your family.

In NYC, stop by any of the Greenmarket Farmers Markets sprinkled throughout the city. What started more than 30 years ago as a few farmers gathered in a parking lot has now grown and spread to over 60 markets all across the city. Greenmarket’s size allows it to offer special opportunities to New Yorkers, including an EBT/Food Stamp program, among other great initiatives.

Get Thrifty with Your “New” Wardrobe

Everyone knows that New York is one of the most expensive cities in the nation. It should come as no surprise, then, that assembling a trendy, new wardrobe is no small (or cheap) task. New York is the capital of materialism and serves as host to thousands of top-brand labels. Where, then, does all that stuff go when the original purchasers want the next new thing? To thrift stores, of course!

Check out some truly chic thrift stores in NYC; skip visiting the flagship stores and drooling over the price tags. If vintage is your deal, look no further than AuH2O Thriftique. Located in the East Village, most of the items in this funky shop are priced at $25 and under. What’s more affordable than that?

Grab a Grown-Up Juice Box

A new school year can mean a new set of stressors. It could simply also mean that it’s simply been another run-of-the-mill week for you, and you could use a little excitement. A late night refreshment can go a long way, but what’s a snack without a good, stiff drink?

For a truly “Harry Potter”-esque experience, call and make a reservation with Please Don’t Tell. This uber-secret NYC bar is literally hidden in the city – you’ll need directions from the staff to find it. There’s no signage anywhere in sight and you’ll have to be granted entry by utilizing a secret code. Once you arrive at the specified address, you’ll be looking for a telephone booth. It’s all very hush-hush, if you know what we mean. If you know, please don’t tell!

If all this doesn’t make you want to jump up and plan a visit to this great metropolis, we don’t know what will!
